Night Vision 1.22

(Co-Written with Bruce Benson)

Yeah, so there isn't much going on this week… I guess we'll take some time off from clubbing and start writing articles again, eh?

It's the summer syndrome : every year around the same period, things quiet down and people get tired. Is it too hot ? Have we already spent all the booze money that daddy lent us ? We've been experiencing the first phase of that eminently interesting phenomenon, and it looks like it's ongoing this week-end...

Week-End Review

We got to Les Saints pretty late, and were greeted with the revelation that it's the Gravity afterhours that's been recycled into what they call a "show bar". The drinks were expensive - at least for a Thursday night - and the place was far from packed. MSTRKRFT were already on the decks, spinning thir productions & remixes as well as some old school classics. We still haven't quite figured out why some fleshy, half naked drunk jailbaits were dancing on the stage, though.

Was Petite Patrie ready for electro? Evidently not, as last Friday's Kick Le… Clavecin party wasn't really one since no one showed up. However good the music selection might've been, it all seems pretty pointless in an empty Théâtre Plaza. Better luck next time?

On the same night, Microzoo's Ghostly International event at Centre Fractal got a pretty decent turn out. No complaints here, just a great evening of "minimal cool".

On Saturday, Gene Farris visited Aria. Marco G opened with his usual explosive blend of electro-tech, eventually handing over the reigns to the Chicago veteran. Farris' started with an efficient selection of warmer house, which was a nice change of weather for the usally tech-ier Aria. However, Mr. Farris stumbled and fell into a pit of generic tracks halfway through. From what we heard, the man was tired and didn't wish to go on any longer. Well, it showed, and lucky for us the management decided to call in a true pro to conclude the evening. Maus showed up and once again proceeded to save the day… err, night… or whatever.

Tuesday, the Academy's Dizzy crew delivered the goods once more. The establishment's new high-tech membership system is now in full effect… So I hope you got your card!

News en Vrac

Things are looking great for Balroom's No Excuse night. Next month, the weekly will welcome guests Vega on the 6th, and Boston's Jeff Grosse on the 20th. On September 3, DJ Remo will be in for a visit from Italy… In preparation for the event, we recommend learning the lyrics to "Black Sabrina" and practicing your own choreography.

If you like to cut things - or people - up, you'll be glad to learn that the mighty Scissor Sisters will be in town on October 11th at Metropolis. High pitched voices & Elton John costumes are to be expected.

Their fellow queens the Pet Shop Boys are showing up at the Place des Arts on the 10th of October. Last time they played Théâtre St-Denis. What's next, a church ? The PM's pied-à-terre in Montreal ? These boys are growing old... No mistake, they're still pretty good dance music producers, but if they can't handle the heat of a real venue, what the fuck are they doing on a world tour ?

Thursday 27/07

Hmm, wow! Really! This is a first for a Thursday: we got nothing to recommend, except maybe staying home and taking it easy… If you really must go out, then you have but one choice option: the excellent David Laguer will be playing Circus Afterhour all-night long.

This we'll just mention : Misstress Barbara DJ's at Overdose and you know what it means... so we won't say it.

Friday 28/07

Another edition of Conduct takes place at Aria. This time, the bill will be shared by Mini, G O'Brien and guest Omni. If you've never heard Mini at Aria, this might be a good occasion to check out how her selection sounds on a good sound system.

Laidback grooves are to be heard at Green Room as Thomas Von Party keeps the love flowing with electro, rock & his special trademarked blend of moonwalking on the ceiling.

Saturday 29/07

The Goods take place at Sala Rossa. We never mentioned them before because, well, we're mainly covering electro events. But we listen to other styles of music too, you know ? So Josh Deep is the guest, and good old deep grooves crackin' up your smile and forcing your feet to move on the dance floor are the idea.

Aria, again, provides the only viable option for the end of the evening… Competent & entertaining Marco G opens, while the lovely and talented Maus concludes. No Farris in sight.

Sunday 30/07

Epsilonlab throw their multicolored party towels on the grounds of Parc Jean-Drapeau and take over the decks at Piknic. Experienced fellas like Miles Moore, Alexandre Bilodeau, Paul Keeley & unpredictable Éloi Brunelle will share their musical knowledge with y'all, and if you know what's good for you, I'll see you there.

This week's edition of No Excuse will showcase guest Saturnin, who will play alongside residents Bender & Sean Kosa. Drop by and, like us, crash headfirst into the working week with no air bag.

Tuesday 01/08

August begins with another Dizzy night, at Academy. This week, Bruno Pronsato visits for a Musique Risquée night with resident Vincent Lemieux. The lovely club will soon go private and may still be accepting new people this week… hurry up!

The Editors play La Tulipe. If you thought that Interpol were doing it right - we won't make you change your mind, but instead strongly advise you to check these talented copycats out. Almost like the real thing ! And how could you resist a band with a lyrical line that says : "You'll speak when you're spoken to" ?!

She Wants Revenge might not be Colder, but they sure try really hard to be Joy Division too ! But don't be fooled, fools : we'll still be among the crazed out crowd invading Spectrum to see them perform their melancholic songs live.

Wednesday 02/08

Wednesdays are the new Saturdays ! At least at Lola Lounge, where the crazyness erupts and the dancers are losing limbs at an alarming rate. Yesterday was Astro-Nutz, celebrating Thomas Von Party's landing / return to normal life in Montreal after a brief trip to Berlin, and this coming edition will also have something special in store for you.

Miles Moore & Eloi Brunelle will be at Academy for Headz Up, a monthly event hosted by Sunny D. Advance tickets on sale for $4 at Atom Heart, Moog Audio & M.E.M. - $6 at the door.

Next Week

Gary Numan crashes his cars at Le National. Jordan Dare returns for Voyeur's seventh edition at La SAT, which will feature a live performance from the UK's Motor. Malente drops by Saphir, while Parking welcomes both Smash TV and Tommie Sunshine. Looks like things are going back to busy bizness !

Until then: keep the meat cookin' !

Night Vision 1.21

(Co-Written with Bruce Benson)

Rejoice, animals, for we have resumed our wicked ways. Our presence will continue to be felt on many dancefloors in the coming days, we'll shatter your soul and burn the devil's mark on your forehead with an industrial punch. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Week-End Review

Two weeks to review: here we go!

Tiga's Parking gig was alright, but not spectacular. Fun, good music and cheap beer… can't really complain. The crowd was rowdy, and the heat was palpable. So were a few booties !

Mossa stole the show at DiskHo's Statik night at La SAT. Headliner John Tejada was disappointing, and the room could've done with a few more partiers. Those who came had a blast, though - watch out for the next DiskHo party featuring none else than the prolific John Dahlback, who's rumoured to bring his father (Jesper's brother !!) along for extra fun.

Danny Howells played at Aria 'til noon, performing musical magic tricks and giving partiers some decent beats to dance to, including some Adam Beyer, Booka Shade, Hot Chip, Patrick Chardronnet & Tiga. Come back soon!

The "veterans" Piknic was great, as usual, with a strong performance by Luc Raymond & Mightykat, and a wonderfully soulful house set by Fred Everything. The vodka was good, people were smiling, and the sun was representing. Bring out more like this and we'll settle at Parc Jean-Drapeau for life !

Academy's going private, it seems, and I'm glad I'll be able to keep attending Dizzy every Tuesday. Always a pleasure.

Last Saturday, at Aria, Miguel Graça opened with a new set which was simply great. Maus concluded the evening expertly, making no compromise on the quality of her selection.

The Piknic was a bit disappointing, alas, with some kind of shirtless guys invasion going on - any rumors you might have heard about that ? Because we didn't get it. When we got there, Nathan Burns & Soundshaper had already begun their nightlong tag team, and let's just say that we knew how to attribute the paternity of every track, good or bad, that came our way.

We only caught a few minutes of Bender's all-night set at Balroom on Sunday, which went in the German electro/tech-house direction: never a bad choice!

News en Vrac

Next month, DJ Mini's Overdose night will welcome guests Smash TV, of BPitch Control fame, who will be playing live at Parking on the 4th . On the 31st , parisian Jennifer "Stay" Cardini will swing by for a visit. Fun times ahead indeed.

French rockers Phoenix will be at Club Soda on Sept. 10th, personal favorites Hall & Oates will perform an accoustic show at Théâtre St-Denis on Sept. 2nd, and the Junior Boys will appear (magically) at Sala Rossa on August 25th.

And finally, Hot Chip will be back in town early in November, gracing our beautiful city without a second appearance this year. Details to come.

Thursday 20/07

Can we say MSTRKRFT fast enough to impress you ? They'll DJ alongside The Juan Maclean & Lazaro Casanovas at Les Saints tonight, and if there's some sense left into you after that ass shakin' I saw you perform at Adonis last night, you know damn well where to head after that spiced up happy hour !

SuperSwede Hakan Lidbo graces Parking a visit, and the password is : eclectic techno !

Mightykat & Lil'Dave invade Jet Club to take you higher @ Phonogenic. Grab that crotch !

Friday 21/07

Uptown girls, and uptown boys, get ready for an invasion of downtown beats - Petite Patrie will shake to the bass this Friday, with another edition of Kick Le… Clavecin at Théâtre Plaza. Fancy Freak, Robeat and our very own Clifford Brown will share the stage. Get ready to boogie down, and cart your ass over to 6505 St-Hubert, corner Beaubien. Heads will roll, feet will burn.

Not too far away, Microzoo are throwing an all night Ghostly International party at Centre Fractal, featuring a live performance by Lusine and a set by Ryan Elliott. Also on the bill: DJs Soundshaper & Nathan Burns, as well as Chic Miniature (Guillaume Coutu & Ernesto) who will be playing live. Lattakeuse Dimage will provide live art, while VJ Low Profile will contribute the rest of the visuals. Of course, you're expected to contribute too, if only by showing up and dancing the night away.

Downtown, at Stereo, DJ Heather & Colette… If you like your house with a sexy feminine touch...

Saturday 22/07

Gene Farris, from chi-town, plays Aria.

The 2nd Saboteur Bal, which still goes down @ Sala Rossa, involves Luci, Ghetto Pony, Denyse Juncutt, DJ Tok & Les Robots de la Rime. Did you say "melting pot of melting brains" ?

Sunday 23/07

The Trigger Picnik will be one to remember : Trevor Walker, Pfreud, François LeBaron, Miguel Graça and, yes, Hakan Lidbo will all, in a way, dig their way to your heart with their housy blend of special love.

No Excuse goes down at Balroom, of course, as Sean Kosa welcomes Krista, a Toronto that'll throw you bricks.

Tuesday 25/07

What would we do without Dizzy? If you're not a regular yet, I suggest you show up and sign up for membership, as Academy will be going private sometime soon.

Next Week

There's nothing going on… apart from the Epsilonlab Piknic, that is. Otherwise, why not plan a nice break from clubbing, recover away from the disco lights and spend some time piecing your mind back together.

Until then: keep them tires screechin' !

They've got the looks...

Does the name MSTRKRFT ring a bell ?

To us, it rings a cowbell. It rings a vocoder, a Giorgio Moroder-esque 'stache and some sweaty Adidas left rotting in the corner of a closed nightclub. Soaked in beer and rythm, their songs kick major asses, and they all follow some kind of "feel good" formula that we can't quite put our fingers on.

Their album "The Looks" is out now, and it's not an hommage to Roxette. And their name is not a Canadian Tire brand : it's a household, sure fire cross-canadian hit on every hip dancefloor.

These guys will make their third appearance in Montreal in three months this Thursday, at a place formerly called "Le Showcase" - huh ? - and now called "Les Saints", at 30 Ste-Catherine West, an adress suggesting it sits next to the now defunct Dôme / Space 32, which has been closed & destroyed so that a new "superclub" called Opera can open in its place later in September.

Do you follow ? We don't.

Anyway, Al P & Jesse F. Keeler know how to produce their shit, and whenever they play with a song to remix it, they've been know to add a definite kick to it by playing every instrument they add themselves. Are they machines ? Are they human beings ? Are they 70's porn star androids ?

No - they're from Toronto. Make no mistake, though : by remixing artists like Annie, The Kills, Bloc Party, Metric, Services (a personal favorite), Wolfmother, and lotsa others, they have spread their name in blood on every city wall.

The launch of their orgasmatic hit "Easy Love" on 12" a few weeks ago (on Last Gang) cemented their position as beatmakers par excellence and assures them a golden place in every respectable DJ's box. They're on the new Fabric mix by Cut Copy, and it looks like they'll be everywhere soon.

So put on your trucker hat and bandana, and come to Showcase (or whatever) on Thursday to show 'em a little dose of Street Justice before they get too big for their own good. They'll perform a DJ set alongside The Juan MacLean (read : John MacLean) and show you what they have in store for the near future... of dance music.

Night Blindness 1.01

Summer can make us lazy, right ?

Well here we are. This is my week off, so Night Vision takes a break as well.

We'll be back stronger, faster, and meaner next week. With double the news, double the attitude, and double the liver damages. In the meantime, you can still refer to last week's calendar for our picks of the week.

There's some shit to do every night.

On Thursday (tonight), Mini's doing it solo at Parking, and Phonogenic at Jet, almost next door, welcomes B'Ugo and Jason Pelletier. On Friday, France's Cédric Gervais appears at Circus. On saturday, Gatineau are playing Divan Orange, and Diplo is playing Sala Rossa.

On Sunday, the Piknic will be electro and housey with Solvent, Soundshaper, Slim Jim & Nathan Burns, and afterwards Bender kicks things the solo way, all night, at Balroom. Bring your earplugs as his German electro will seemingly kick your ass and put you back in your moma's womb !

Next week : Hakan Lidbo at Parking, MSTRKRFT launches THE LOOKS at le Showcase / The Saints !?, Mightykat visits Jet Club for Phonogenic, Kick le Clavecin 2 kicks your booty, and the Piknic will be Trigger.

Another quiet week in the sun !

Night Vision 1.20

(Co-Written with Clifford Brown)

Wise up, suckers! Montréal keeps welcoming the biggest stars in the music business this week. The Jazz Fest is in its final miles, people are exhausted, but they still keep packin' the streets. Check out what we have in store for you and start drooling...

Week-End Review

On Thursday, Overdose ended up being a Hacker-less affair, instead showcasing last-minute guest Jordan Dare and Mini's in front of a really, really, really, really, really packed house.

Friday's new Conduct night at Aria had a way bigger turn out than the last time the venue featured the same line-up. Musically however, we found the first edition more satisfying. G O'Brien's absence left a big void.

Saturday's Voyeur was as solid as ever. Jordan Dare warmed up the room efficiently for Ottawa's Disconnected, whose energetic performance certainly left no one unscathed. Definitely check these guys out when they come back, and don't miss Motor's live set at Voyeur next month!

Later the same night, Vega played quite an interesting set at Aria. Let's hope this, along with last month visit by The Autists, signals the ushering in of some fresh blood on Saturday nights to support the always-excellent Marco G, Maus & Miguel Graça.

Sunday's Piknic was windy, then a bit chilly, and then just plain cold. That didn't stop the Musique Risquée gang from going on past 10pm, making something great out of a potentially disastrous Sunday, thanks to mother nature's erratic choices. The fireworks provided an impromptu light show, which was a welcomed bonus.

No Excuse went on at Balroom in front of a Saint-Laurent crowd and, believe it or not, Bender & Sean Kosa got them moving.

Tuesday, Academy welcomed Akufen who gave DizzyHeads a sweet set, although not quite recapturing Sunday's magic. Vincent Lemieux concluded the evening competently.

News en Vrac

We're as surprised as you by the fact we have nothing to report. In the coming months, lots of marvels will unfold in front of your dazed eyes, and we'll probably have something to reveal next week, but in the meantime, take a deep breath, and instead of getting excited about all these fresh cool acts coming to town, get yourself together, slow your heart rate, and live.

Thursday 06/07

Toga! Toga! Toga! That's right, Parking are throwing a toga party this… what? Oh… Err… Well… Sorry 'bout that, but on the brighter side of things, it looks like Thomas Von Party's brother, Tiga, will be dropping by Parking for a specially overcrowded Overdose overheated summer blow out. Mini will be there too, combining her dark powers of electro with The Canadian Colossus' peppy eclectic selection. Bring your coffin, 'cause you're not making it out of this one.

Another Phonogenic night takes place at Jet and will feature Eloi Brunelle & Saturnin.

On the Jazz side of town, The Brazilian Girls and sample-meister Ursula 1000 perform at Club Soda, where the weather is supposed to be equally hot. Brazil oblige...

Friday 07/07

DiskHo go all out once again for another edition of Statik, featuring John Tejada's fantastic minimal tech-house grooves. DiskHo definitely know their shit, as they're also brining in Mossa & Jon Schmidt to support our man from California. Frankly, we could hardly hope for a better bill, and with such a crew at the helm, going with the flow is no advice, it's the prime directive. The operative word will be "Sweat", and the objective will be clear: enjoy the "Sucre"! It's going down at La SAT, and will set you back a lousy $15 at the door.

Can't get enough out of your Friday night? Rest assured: Aria thought about you freaks and decided to hook you up with Mini and G O'Brien for a wild electro party in Montréal's big room. Doors opens at 2am, and $10 will get you in.

If you like it quieter or just can't get enough of all that jazz - or what passes for jazz these days, anyway - head over to Club Soda as new soul prodigy Jamie Lidell will perform song from his excellent album MULTIPLY. Vincent Lemieux supports on the turntables afterwards...

Saturday 08/07

The legendary Danny Howells returns to Aria. Forget about Global Underground and expect things to get extra-mad as Howells always packs an extra-special musical power-punch-to-the-nuts when he comes to Montréal. Don't miss this one, but be warned: it looks like it's gonna hurt!

Sci-fi freak and all-out weirdo The Juan Maclean swings by Montréal once again, and with MSTRKRFT too! Bliss is also on the bill, making an already promising evening even more… promising! This is likely to be one of those Jazz Fest nights you'll be glad not to have missed, and it's taking place at Club Soda.

Sunday 09/07

The Sunday ritual continues as Luc Raymond, MightyKat and Fred Everything invade Parc Jean-Drapeau for another tasty, housey Piknic. These veterans all are superstars in their own way, and being able to see them strut their musical stuff under the sun for a mere 7$ is not a chance you'll get that often. Last year, Everything made us sweat like maniacs, and I sure hope he'll pull the same tricks out of his hat this time around.

No Excuse resident DJ Bender welcomes Roméo Kardec: a very nice choice for a Sunday that will end yet another great week-end in Montreal. Tired? Go in there, have a drink, sit back and relax... until the serious grooves make you get up and shake it!

Monday 10/07

Romeo Kardec's 'O' night returns, at Café Lounge De Lima.

Tuesday 11/07

Dizzy is on, at its new location at beautiful Academy, located at 4445 St-Laurent, just a few steps away from Mont-Royal.

Wednesday 12/07

There's a new nightly on Wednesdays supervised by Thomas Von Party, and called STUNT. It all goes down at "No Man's Land", a.k.a. Lola Lounge, at 1023 Bleury, and SEXUESCENT, from Paris, will be performing at the launch, this Wednesday, July 12th.

You know what to expect from the guy with curls & bling !

Next Week

Rumours have it that Benny Benassi's gig might be cancelled on the 15th. Do we care ? No.

Because there's a shitload of things to do on the same night : Diplo & Blonde Do Role bring their baile funk to Sala Rossa, another edition of Microtek takes place at Main Hall, and a dirty party called "Brooklyn, 1987" goes on somewhere we can't disclose as of yet. If you're a friend of ours, you'll be invited, and if you're interested in hearing us at our wildest, drop us a line and we might keep you au courant.

Otherwise : Peaches brings her unshaved attitude to town.

John Tejada: Sucre, Sweat & Everything Nice

Although rooted in Detroit techno, tagging John Tejada's sound with a definitive label is a tricky job indeed.

While his main body of work is comprised of dancy minimalist tracks, Tejada never shies away from exploring the boundaries of other varieties of music, blurring the lines that divide house and techno along the way, crafting twisted cross-genre groovers that never rest until the dance floor is filled.

From the relentless beat of "Sweat (On The Walls)", the curious playfulness of "Sucre" or the cheerful peppiness of "Voyager", to the suspicious mood of "Paranoia", the unending progression of "Mono on Mono" or the hypnotic taunting of "Big City Life": you never know where John Tejada will end up next, but you always enjoy the ride.

The multitalented & prolific California-based DJ/producer/remixer has been active since the mid '90s, releasing all kinds of records under different monikers, and with a varied array of collaborators, including Arian Leviste, Justin Maxwell, guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto and Titonton Duvanté. Of course, neglecting DJ Qzen's wonderful vocal contributions to hits such as "Paranoia", "Sucre", "Sweat" or Tejada's 2005 remix of Christopher Just's "I'm a Disco Dancer" would be an unforgivable mistake.

Often released on his own label Palette Recordings, John Tejada's songs are not entirely alien to the beats propagated by imprints such as Poker Flat or Trapez. Therefore, it came as no surprise when Steve Bug invited Mr. Tejada to join up with the Poker Flat crew and mix his label's fifth anniversary compilation back in '04. John Tejada is also associated with Plug Research and Dan Bell's Seventh City, amongst many others, which should give music-lovers a decent clue about how the man's song may sound.

DiskHo is bringing John Tejada to town this Friday, July 7th, for their Statik night at the Société des Arts Technologiques which will also feature Mossa & John Schmidt. The party starts at 10, and will set you back a mere $15. In the meantime, you can listen to a John Tejada mix on AudioFamilies' website.
