Night Vision 1.20

(Co-Written with Clifford Brown)

Wise up, suckers! Montréal keeps welcoming the biggest stars in the music business this week. The Jazz Fest is in its final miles, people are exhausted, but they still keep packin' the streets. Check out what we have in store for you and start drooling...

Week-End Review

On Thursday, Overdose ended up being a Hacker-less affair, instead showcasing last-minute guest Jordan Dare and Mini's in front of a really, really, really, really, really packed house.

Friday's new Conduct night at Aria had a way bigger turn out than the last time the venue featured the same line-up. Musically however, we found the first edition more satisfying. G O'Brien's absence left a big void.

Saturday's Voyeur was as solid as ever. Jordan Dare warmed up the room efficiently for Ottawa's Disconnected, whose energetic performance certainly left no one unscathed. Definitely check these guys out when they come back, and don't miss Motor's live set at Voyeur next month!

Later the same night, Vega played quite an interesting set at Aria. Let's hope this, along with last month visit by The Autists, signals the ushering in of some fresh blood on Saturday nights to support the always-excellent Marco G, Maus & Miguel Graça.

Sunday's Piknic was windy, then a bit chilly, and then just plain cold. That didn't stop the Musique Risquée gang from going on past 10pm, making something great out of a potentially disastrous Sunday, thanks to mother nature's erratic choices. The fireworks provided an impromptu light show, which was a welcomed bonus.

No Excuse went on at Balroom in front of a Saint-Laurent crowd and, believe it or not, Bender & Sean Kosa got them moving.

Tuesday, Academy welcomed Akufen who gave DizzyHeads a sweet set, although not quite recapturing Sunday's magic. Vincent Lemieux concluded the evening competently.

News en Vrac

We're as surprised as you by the fact we have nothing to report. In the coming months, lots of marvels will unfold in front of your dazed eyes, and we'll probably have something to reveal next week, but in the meantime, take a deep breath, and instead of getting excited about all these fresh cool acts coming to town, get yourself together, slow your heart rate, and live.

Thursday 06/07

Toga! Toga! Toga! That's right, Parking are throwing a toga party this… what? Oh… Err… Well… Sorry 'bout that, but on the brighter side of things, it looks like Thomas Von Party's brother, Tiga, will be dropping by Parking for a specially overcrowded Overdose overheated summer blow out. Mini will be there too, combining her dark powers of electro with The Canadian Colossus' peppy eclectic selection. Bring your coffin, 'cause you're not making it out of this one.

Another Phonogenic night takes place at Jet and will feature Eloi Brunelle & Saturnin.

On the Jazz side of town, The Brazilian Girls and sample-meister Ursula 1000 perform at Club Soda, where the weather is supposed to be equally hot. Brazil oblige...

Friday 07/07

DiskHo go all out once again for another edition of Statik, featuring John Tejada's fantastic minimal tech-house grooves. DiskHo definitely know their shit, as they're also brining in Mossa & Jon Schmidt to support our man from California. Frankly, we could hardly hope for a better bill, and with such a crew at the helm, going with the flow is no advice, it's the prime directive. The operative word will be "Sweat", and the objective will be clear: enjoy the "Sucre"! It's going down at La SAT, and will set you back a lousy $15 at the door.

Can't get enough out of your Friday night? Rest assured: Aria thought about you freaks and decided to hook you up with Mini and G O'Brien for a wild electro party in Montréal's big room. Doors opens at 2am, and $10 will get you in.

If you like it quieter or just can't get enough of all that jazz - or what passes for jazz these days, anyway - head over to Club Soda as new soul prodigy Jamie Lidell will perform song from his excellent album MULTIPLY. Vincent Lemieux supports on the turntables afterwards...

Saturday 08/07

The legendary Danny Howells returns to Aria. Forget about Global Underground and expect things to get extra-mad as Howells always packs an extra-special musical power-punch-to-the-nuts when he comes to Montréal. Don't miss this one, but be warned: it looks like it's gonna hurt!

Sci-fi freak and all-out weirdo The Juan Maclean swings by Montréal once again, and with MSTRKRFT too! Bliss is also on the bill, making an already promising evening even more… promising! This is likely to be one of those Jazz Fest nights you'll be glad not to have missed, and it's taking place at Club Soda.

Sunday 09/07

The Sunday ritual continues as Luc Raymond, MightyKat and Fred Everything invade Parc Jean-Drapeau for another tasty, housey Piknic. These veterans all are superstars in their own way, and being able to see them strut their musical stuff under the sun for a mere 7$ is not a chance you'll get that often. Last year, Everything made us sweat like maniacs, and I sure hope he'll pull the same tricks out of his hat this time around.

No Excuse resident DJ Bender welcomes Roméo Kardec: a very nice choice for a Sunday that will end yet another great week-end in Montreal. Tired? Go in there, have a drink, sit back and relax... until the serious grooves make you get up and shake it!

Monday 10/07

Romeo Kardec's 'O' night returns, at Café Lounge De Lima.

Tuesday 11/07

Dizzy is on, at its new location at beautiful Academy, located at 4445 St-Laurent, just a few steps away from Mont-Royal.

Wednesday 12/07

There's a new nightly on Wednesdays supervised by Thomas Von Party, and called STUNT. It all goes down at "No Man's Land", a.k.a. Lola Lounge, at 1023 Bleury, and SEXUESCENT, from Paris, will be performing at the launch, this Wednesday, July 12th.

You know what to expect from the guy with curls & bling !

Next Week

Rumours have it that Benny Benassi's gig might be cancelled on the 15th. Do we care ? No.

Because there's a shitload of things to do on the same night : Diplo & Blonde Do Role bring their baile funk to Sala Rossa, another edition of Microtek takes place at Main Hall, and a dirty party called "Brooklyn, 1987" goes on somewhere we can't disclose as of yet. If you're a friend of ours, you'll be invited, and if you're interested in hearing us at our wildest, drop us a line and we might keep you au courant.

Otherwise : Peaches brings her unshaved attitude to town.

Yeah and apparently, SEXUESCENT have become TROPICANA in the course of a week, and Von Party's night is now called COCONUTZ instead of STUNT. Whew ! Anybody went there yesterday and knows how it was ?
