G for Germany
G O'Brien has had a residency at Aria for a while now. He's a pretty versatile DJ, able to play a wide range of styles quite adequately. Recently, he has impressed me with his punchy electro sets, but nothing could've prepared me for last night's spectacular performance.
You see, G just got back from Germany with $500 worth of new records: Techno records, Minimal records, Acid records, Electro records, Fuck-your-brains up records, and it seems he decided to inject all these records into one set of pure madness last night. He started smoothly, with minimal techno and went up from there towards loud, crashy electro, much to the delight of the crowd, creating a flawless build up that didn't fail to reach musical bliss.
Aria, its guests and its residents have surprised me quite a few times recently, and now G's set from last night can be added right near the top of my 'best-of-2006-so-far' list. A night of unrelenting musical mayhem, and the best G O'Brien set I've ever heard, bar none.
As far as I know he's not booked at Aria again this month, but definitely check the guy out ASAP.
