Alex Under The Great
Swinging by Mutek's big event at Fonderie Darling tonight is one of Spain's most innovative new producers of minimal tech grooves: Alex Under.
We're lucky to have him in Montréal for his North American debut…
Based in Madrid, Alex Under has been toying around with computers since the mid 90s, but it wasn't until 2004 that he started to make his mark on the global techno scene. His assemblages of of would-be glitchy beats always veer away from being too 'intellectual', while always remaining intelligent. It's minimal alright, but it's minimal that understands that you're here to dance.
But that's not all: through all his song flows a deeply melodic undertone, carefully hidden within a palette of sound that would yield so little in the hands of anyone else. Alex Under takes this underlying melody and explodes it into funky hooks that would make Steve Bug proud.
Most of his music is exclusively available on 12'' vinyl, from labels Trapez and his own CMYK imprint. Alex Under does have one album available on CD. If you like what you hear this week-end, I strongly advise you to pick up his 2005 Trapez full-length "Dispositivos De Mi Granja", which features "Las Bicicletas Son Para El Verano", a wonderful track that gathered quite a lot of attention when it first came out.
Don't miss Alex Under tonight, at Mutek's Nocturne 3 event.

Hope you got your tickets in advance! Luckily, friends called me from the premises to tell me the show was sold out, and yes: I'm bummed out I missed it !
